This morning we went to see an exquisite exhibit, Achipelago: Portraits of Life in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands - photographs by David Liittschwager & Susan Middleton. You may have seen their work in Nat'l Geographic with that albatross's belly full of plastic pieces. Totally inspiring photographs. I learned that if a female saddle wrasse lives long enough, it eventually changes its sex and becomes "one of the boys". Rad.

Bought myself a snorkel and mask then we headed down south again to Maluaka Beach. On the road there were mountain bikers training for the XTerra Triathalon . When we walked down to the beach my out-of-shape ego was boosted by a woman who greeted me as a fellow triathalete! ha! Small world, she was from Bend, Oregon.

The snorkeling there was just ok. Had to swim far out to reach the reef but I didn't mind - I felt like a super woman with my fins and webbed gloves to pull me through the water quickly. The reef was pretty bare, with large coral formations like underwater topiary, but I did see the classic humuhumunukunukuapua'a, a long yellow trumpet fish, really large spotted box fish, lots of wana (sea urchins), some other fish, AND AND AND a honu! It appeared out of nowhere, just 15 yards in front of me. Huge. It was near the surface getting a breath of air, then it disappeared to the depths. I got kinda freaked out, being in proximity of such a large creature. Started thinking about other large creatures that may be lurking about, so I turned around and booked it back to shore!

Mom and I are heading out to Hana for the weekend. See ya in a few....
