Aloha!! Finally here. Flight was easy, about 5 hours. But with the time difference, I left PDX at 10:30am, and arrived on Maui at 12:45pm (3:45pm pdx time). Shortly after take off I was treated to super clear views of our beloved Oregon peaks AND the Oregon Coast!! Way cool. Although I could see some forest fires in southern Oregon?
Landed on Maui in a warm wind. Ahhhhhhhhh. Mom picked me up and we headed straight for south Maui - first to Kamaole III Beach, but it was too windy, then to Palauea Beach, nice and uncrowded, sandy bottom, small rolling waves. It was delightful to swim in the cool clear Hawaiian ocean, salty and bouyant. On the left, a view of Pu'u Ola'i (Red Hill cinder cone) further south, in front of me the silhouettes of uninhabited island of Kaho'olawe and Molokini Crater, to the right the island of Lana'i and the West Maui Mountains with a ridge of windmills crankin'. The beach is flanked by jagged rocks and after a few waves crashed over them with white foam I saw something very smooth and round bobbing about, maybe 50 yards away, and then a quick flip of a fin, and then a head... a Honu!!!! (sea turtle, my totem!) Perfect! Just what I hoped to see. And then I saw another and another. They were huge!
The winds were kicking up all the red dirt in the empty sugar cane fields that obliterate central Maui, so visibility was hazy. Apparently it hadn't rained here in a while but it did today. I'm trying to escape the rain!! Doh! At least it's warm out, so it's pleasant. This is crazy, on our way to Pa'ia to visit my sister briefly, there was a rainbow on one side of us, and then clear sunny blue skies on the other side. Only in Hawaii.....
Stocked up on groceries at the awesome Mana Foods which I dare say has better selection of some items than New Seasons! Then we finally headed up the winding road guided by a full moon to mom's house upcountry, past Makawao. Elevation is 3,520 ft, so it's pretty chilly up here! And I was trying to escape the chill! Double Doh! haha...
Anyway, that's all for now. Having a great time hanging with my mama and just enjoying life.

I know what you mean about the rain; somehow living in the NW imbues our very bones with the call of the rain...first it rained when Tiny1 and I were kayaking in Kauai and then in Monterosso...Portlanders must be moisture magnets! But the warm rian of Hawaii beats the cool of Portland every time. Day before last I was biking to work in 38 degree weather and a homeless gent strolled by as I was warming my hands: that's what happens when you don't have gloves he chuckled...please blow a bit of warm wind our way and enjoy!
